Buckeyes – A Delightful Treat for Peanut Butter Lovers
Buckeyes are a Midwestern holiday favorite! These peanut butter balls are partially dipped in chocolate to resemble the famous Ohio nut.

Growing up in Ohio, I’ve come to appreciate the unique culinary delights this region has to offer, particularly during the festive season. Buckeyes, the delectable peanut butter and chocolate candies, hold a special place on our holiday tables.
Whether at Christmas gatherings or cheering on our beloved Ohio State Buckeyes, these treats are a staple that never fails to impress. If you’ve yet to experience the joy of buckeyes, you’re in for a delightful surprise!

What are Buckeyes?
Widely known in the Midwest, buckeyes are chocolate-covered peanut butter balls that resemble the nut of the buckeye tree. The buckeye tree is not only significant to Ohio, being the state’s official tree, but it also inspires the Ohio State University mascot, Brutus Buckeye.
While the actual buckeye nuts are inedible, their representation in candy form is a beloved treat during the Christmas season and football games alike.

How to Make Buckeyes
Making buckeyes is easier than it might seem! If you’ve attempted my old-fashioned peanut butter balls before, you’re halfway there.
Ingredients you’ll need
This simple recipe requires the following ingredients, which you might already have at home:
- Unsalted butter: Softened butter forms the base of the candies.
- Creamy peanut butter: Use smooth peanut butter to achieve the best texture.
- Vanilla extract: A dash enhances the flavor.
- Powdered sugar: This sweetener provides structure and sweetness.
- Kosher salt: A bit of salt balances the sweetness.
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips: For coating—ensure to use regular chocolate.
- Shortening: This ingredient smooths the melted chocolate for even coating.
Making buckeye candy
To begin, mix softened butter, peanut butter, and vanilla until well combined. Gradually add powdered sugar and salt, mixing until smooth. After that, divide the mixture into tablespoon-sized portions, roll them into balls, and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Refrigerate for one hour to firm up.

After chilling, if the balls aren’t perfectly smooth, you can roll them in your palms. Then, freeze them for another hour.
To prepare the coating, combine chocolate chips and shortening in a bowl and microwave until melted and smooth. Use a toothpick to dip each chilled ball into the chocolate, ensuring the peanut butter center remains visible. Place the dipped candies on the parchment paper, and refrigerate until the chocolate sets.

Storage Tips
Buckeyes can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days. For longer storage, freeze them for up to a month. They thaw quickly, allowing for convenient serving anytime!
