How to Make My Easy Cherry Cobbler
This easy cherry cobbler is a great dessert option when you have last-minute company or need something to take to a summer cookout but don’t have a lot of time or energy on your hands.
It comes together in just a few minutes but is delicious enough that no one would ever guess how easy it was to make!
Ingredients You’ll Need
- 5 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon fine sea salt
- 1 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- ¼ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
- 1 can cherry pie filling OR 2 ½ cups homemade cherry pie filling
When making this recipe, make sure to measure the flour correctly to achieve the perfect cobbler every time. Did you know that almond and cherries pair wonderfully? A hint of almond extract enhances the flavor of cherry desserts beautifully. However, if you don’t prefer almond extract, simply leave it out—the cobbler will still be delightful!
Using cherry pie filling is what makes this recipe so easy. I prefer my homemade cherry pie filling, but a 21-ounce can works just as well. If choosing store-bought, look for options with extra fruit for the best flavor in every bite.
Making This Recipe
This recipe yields just the right amount of cherry cobbler in a 9×9-inch dish to feed a few people. Start by placing the butter in a 9×9-inch baking dish and placing it in the oven while preheating to 350°F.
While the oven preheats and the butter melts, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Add the milk, vanilla, and almond extract, whisking to combine until the batter is smooth and thin, resembling a pancake batter.
Once the butter has melted and the oven is preheated, pour the batter over the melted butter in the pan—do not stir!
Spoon the cherry pie filling evenly over the top of the batter without stirring again. Place the pan back in the oven and bake for 50-55 minutes, until the center is set and the top turns golden brown. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving warm, preferably with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Storage and Reheating Tips
Store leftovers of this easy cherry cobbler in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days, or in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For the best taste, serve the cobbler warm. You can quickly reheat single servings in a microwave-safe bowl for 30-60 seconds. For larger portions, cover the baking dish with foil and reheat in a 350°F oven for 5-10 minutes, or until warmed through.
Recipe FAQs
If you want to make a larger amount of cobbler, I recommend doubling the recipe and baking it in a 13×9-inch pan. If you make the recipe as written in a larger pan, the cobbler is much thinner and you don’t get as much cherry filling in each bite. Simply double the amounts of all ingredients to serve a larger group.
Absolutely! You could use any of your favorite fruit pie fillings, such as peach or blueberry. Just make sure that the filling contains actual fruit pieces—stay away from fillings like pumpkin or lemon for this recipe.
To make this cherry cobbler vegan or dairy-free, swap the butter for your choice of vegan/dairy-free butter and use your preferred dairy-free milk. If you’re making homemade cherry pie filling, it is already vegan and dairy-free. If opting for canned filling, double-check the ingredients to ensure it meets your dietary requirements.
If you need a gluten-free option, use a one-for-one gluten-free flour substitute in place of all-purpose flour. Again, check your pie filling to ensure it aligns with your dietary needs.
