A Guide to Toasting Coconut Like a Pro
Ever wondered how to toast coconut? Making it yourself is the easiest thing to do! Learn 3 simple methods for taking your shredded coconut to the next level.
Toasted coconut is one of my favorite ingredients to add to baked goods. While I enjoy coconut straight from the bag, there’s something about toasted coconut that truly enhances its flavor.
Did you know coconuts have traveled the globe? Historically, traders introduced them to different regions over 2,000 years ago, but their ability to float also enabled them to spread across the subtropical seas on their own.
Coconuts are fascinating and delicious, and they tend to evoke strong opinions; people either love them or hate them. I belong firmly to the “love” camp.
If you share my appreciation for coconut, let’s dive into how to toast it for even more deliciousness! Here are three simple methods to elevate your shredded coconut.
Why Toast Your Coconut?
Toasting coconut is similar to toasting nuts; it brings out a beautiful nuttiness while adding depth and flavor to your recipes. The aroma of toasted coconut is enticing, and its crisp texture offers a delightful contrast to the chewiness of untoasted coconut.
While you don’t need to toast coconut every time you use it, doing so can elevate your dish in many cases!
How to Toast Coconut
While commercially toasted coconut is available in most baking aisles, it often contains preservatives. Toasting your own is incredibly simple and allows for a fresher taste.
I have three methods for toasting coconut, which include:
- How to toast coconut in the oven.
- How to toast coconut on the stove.
- How to toast coconut in the microwave.
These methods work for both sweetened and unsweetened coconut, though be mindful that sweetened coconut will toast more quickly due to its added sugar.
In the Oven
If you’re preheating your oven for another purpose, make the most of it by toasting your coconut at the same time. Begin by preheating your oven to 325°F.
Spread the coconut in a thin layer on a baking sheet, and bake for 5-10 minutes, stirring every few minutes for even toasting. Once it reaches your desired level of toast, transfer it to a bowl to cool and prevent further cooking.
On the Stove
I personally prefer the stovetop method as it gives me more control. This method allows for frequent stirring for an evenly toasted product. However, the oven and microwave methods work well, too!
To toast coconut on the stove, place it in a large skillet over medium-low heat, stirring frequently. Once the coconut is evenly golden to your liking, move it to a bowl to cool.
In the Microwave
The microwave method is quick; start by spreading about ½ cup of shredded coconut on a microwave-safe plate. Microwave the coconut in 30-second intervals, stirring after each burst, until it reaches the desired level of toastiness.
Uses for Toasted Coconut
Toasted coconut can enhance a variety of dishes! From caramel coconut chocolate chip cookies to chocolate zucchini bread, its flavor is versatile. Coconut is a delightful ingredient to work with, particularly in spring and summer.
Consider using toasted coconut in desserts like coconut cupcakes, key lime coconut cheesecake, or even as a crunchy element in breakfast parfaits with Greek yogurt and fresh berries.
Can You Sweeten Unsweetened Coconut?
If you have unsweetened shredded coconut and want to add sweetness, place one pound of unsweetened shredded coconut in a zip-top bag with 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar, then shake to combine.
However, avoid toasting the coconut after adding sugar as the sugar may burn, resulting in wasted ingredients.
